that's getting more dire by the day. the city marked a grim milestone this week, 500 murders so far this year. it was a shooting on the city's west side thursday that pushed the number to 500. police say a 40-year-old man was shot in the head outside a convenience store. another troubling number, 270, that's the number of children who have been killed by guns in chicago in the last five years. back to this year's 500 homicides. that's up 50% from last year. it is the highest the murder rate has been in the city since 2008. it was 512 then. what's going on here? some say it's a police problem, that chicago police are simply outnumbered and outgunned. unable to handle the influx of kids who want to kill kids to make some cash or to climb the social ladder in chicago gang life. or is it a gun problem? the city has some of the toughest laws on the books. but the chicago police department says 87% of the homicides this year are a result of gun violence. so let's talk. joining me tonight for this conversation, tio hardiman. and harold pollack joins us as well. welcome, gentlemen. first to

them are here to stay, we have learned. an official announced a special plan by the city to convert the memorial, here is part of what this city official told residents. the thousands of flowers, letters and prayers, the signs and photos, teddy bears and more will be gathered and processed into soil that will serve in the foundation of a future permanent memorial to honor the slain children and adults. officials say it will be a sacred memorial. the items will be collected and converted starting this week. >>> now, new information on that tragic shooting in upstate new york on christmas eve. two firefighters were shot and killed. two others were wounded, after responding to a call that a house was on fire. today we're learning more about the shooter, william spengler. police say the 62-year-old set fire to his sister's house, and then shot the firemen. police think he also killed his sister, her body was found in the burnt home. spengler left a suicide note. and here's part of it. i still have to get ready to see how much of the neighborhood i can burn down and do what i like doing best

with breaking news on an alleged murder/suicide involving aye player on the kansas city chiefs football team. kansas city affiliate kctv reports the player who has not been identified allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend then drove to a practice facility at the team's arrow head stadium and shot and killed himself. the second shooting occurred at 7:50 a.m. local time at the team's facility. it was linked to an earlier shooting off site. we're going to be keeping you updated and tracking this story as it develops which is expected to over the course of the next few hours. >>> also breaking news out of florida. there's been a deadly bus crash at the miami international airport. our affiliate wplg says the bus carrying 32 passengers crashed into an overpass at the arrival terminal. two people are reported dead. 30 people were hospitalized, 30 of them with critical injuries. we'll bring you details of that story also as they come into us at cnn. >>> he's wanted for questioning and now a pioneer turned fugitive john mcafee is giving what our veteran reporter says is one of most

drive-through in the entire city. people lined up for blocks and blocks to hand over their weapons in exchange for grocery gift cards. while there were many people who dropped off just one gun, perhaps something that had been in the family for years, there were many who brought in multiple weapons. the los angeles times reports police took out 22 pistols from the truck of one honda, that got the driver $1,000 in gift cards. the people had reasons beyond money for turning in those weapons. >> different shootings and things have been happening in the country over the last couple of weeks. i was really driven to bring this gun in today. >> to turn in some ammunition and guns that may be stolen from our house and you know someone may do something really bad with them. >> we'll find out later today the total number of weapons turned in, in los angeles. >>> take a look at these live pictures out of syracuse, new york, this is the same powerful storm that has been moving across the country, started in california over the weekend, dumping heavy snow all along the way and you name it, high win

proposed construction would separate the west bank cities of bethlehem and ramallah from jerusalem. essentially cut the west bank in two. the area israel wants to develop is known as e-1. that stands for very simply east one, east of jerusalem, and it would connect the large israeli settlement town of maiale adumim. they have summoned israel's ambassadors to this country to condemn this plan. others also speaking out, including germany. a senior israeli government official says prime minister benjamin netanyahu has signed off only on planning and zoning for future construction on e-1, but the bulldozers have been there tearing up the ground yesterday. now, the palestinians, of course, see this as the ultimate threat to peace, and certainly a two-state solution. the chief negotiator says nblg e-1 would destroy the two-state solution, establishing east jerusalem as the capital of palestine and practically ends the peace process and any opportunity to talk about negotiations in the future. let's bring in fred plankin who joins us from east jerusalem. this has been a red line for years

. it's called chamber of commerce weather for the city of cleveland. it's snowing sideways. the snow is coming in from lake erie and every once in a while we get one of these gusts that force me to turn my back to that wind because it puts the big fat snowflakes right in our faces, but this city says they are prepared for what has already been an already dangerous and deadly storm. the middle of the country is starting to dig out from a blustery snowstorm. in waterloo, iowa, shovels and snowplows are back in use after more than eight inches of snow fell. good news for many businesses after a lackluster season a year ago. >> been delivering a lot of snow blowers, a lot of equipment has been breaking. we have been fixing equipment for people to get snow removed. >> reporter: picturesque in wisconsin, good for building snowmen but a challenge for crews clearing snow. >> the snow is really wet. a lot of buildup on the front of the plows and very hard for the snow to scour off the plows. >> reporter: storm conditions have caused havoc on a lot of roadways and left thousands of residents w
